The Barrow Rocker

Description

" This chair was built by James barrow in 1872 and is the only one of its kind in the world. He constructed it from spare clock parts and his mothers rocking chair. It was made to help soothe his son to sleep because the child had bad teething problems. The chair was never commercialised but was passed down through the Barrow family until the present day when his great great granddaughter Emily inherited the chair. When we saw the chair on an episode of Attic Treasures we contacted Emily about her chair. She happily gifted it over to us for restoration.

The chair uses old music box parts within clockwork pieces to make the sound, these types of sounds have always been used to soothe babies to sleep so the chair could still be used today, as indeed it was by Emily Barrows mother. These music boxes were very popular in the 1870s and have once again become a favourite for mothers and young babies. The chair makes good use of this mechanism in a very soothing and relaxing manner. "

This was the one great image for mine and :iconmonnanon:'s 3rd year project at uni where we had to create an -ing chair. We wanted it to look like an old degraded black and white photograph.
